Grilled cheese in the lot paid for my first year of law school

Ava SencionLot vendor turned lawyer. Grilled cheese paid for my 1L year.1 min read

Two Coleman stoves, a cooler of Tillamook, and a hand-lettered sign that said GRILLED CHEESE $4 / $3 IF YOU'RE NICE. My margins were terrible and my volume was absurd.

The economics of the lot are real economics. You learn pricing psychology, cash handling, crowd flow, and how to read whether someone is about to be a problem — which, it turns out, is roughly the entire first semester of practicing law, just with more cheese.

I cleared enough over two summers to cover tuition and books for 1L. I told this to an interviewer at a firm once. He thought I was joking and then he didn't, and then he asked whether I still had the sign.

I do. It's framed in my office. It has grease on it.

My mom said almost the same thing and I've never forgiven her either.

The 'four guys who can't decide' line is going on a shirt.

I was at that show. Section 108. I remember the exact moment you're describing.

Sending this to my brother, who has been trying to explain this band to me for a decade.
