My dad took me to Nectar's in 1988 and thought they were terrible

He was 34 and I was 9 and neither of us should have been there on a Saturday night. He had a friend who knew the drummer, or thought he did.

I remember: a bar that smelled like a bar, a room with no stage so the band was just sort of in the room, and a very long song with a lot of parts that my father, on the drive home, described as "four guys who can't decide."

He is 72 now. He has been to eleven shows. He has strong opinions about the 1997 material and a favorite version of Fluffhead that he will defend at Thanksgiving.

I have never once let him forget "four guys who can't decide," and he has never once apologized for it, and that is the entire relationship in one sentence.

Was not ready for that turn in the third paragraph.

This is the best thing I've read on here. Thank you for writing it down.

The detail about the poncho is what makes this. Perfect.
