Taping the 11/22/97 Hampton set with a mic stand made of a broom

The venue let tapers in but my stand had been confiscated in Winston-Salem two nights earlier for reasons that were, in fairness, entirely my fault.

So: a push broom from a janitor's closet, gaffer tape, and a pair of small-diaphragm condensers zip-tied into a rough spaced pair. It looked insane. A tapers' section is a jury of your peers and I was found guilty on sight.

The tape is fine. Not great — the broom moved. But there's a moment about nine minutes into Ghost where the whole room drops to nothing and you can hear one guy behind me say, very quietly, "oh no." That's on my tape. That's the only copy of that man saying that.

Twenty-nine years of taping and that's still the take I'd save from a fire.
