I draw every set I see, badly, in the dark

Small notebook, one pen, no light. The rule is I can't look at the page. Whatever comes out, comes out.

They're objectively terrible. Overlapping loops, a lot of scribbled shapes that are supposed to be the lighting rig, occasional legible words like "PIPER — too fast??" and once, memorably, just "OH" written six times getting larger.

But I have eleven years of them now, and flipping through is closer to remembering a show than a setlist ever gets. A setlist tells you what happened. The drawings tell you what it was like to be there, which is a different and less shareable fact.

My partner had one framed for my birthday. It's from Deer Creek and it looks like a seismograph having a bad night. It's the best gift I've ever received.

Man. That last line. Come on.

My mom said almost the same thing and I've never forgiven her either.

The 'four guys who can't decide' line is going on a shirt.
